Contact Heat Level 1 Gloves (EN 407, 100°C): frequently asked questions

What does contact heat level 1 mean?

It's the second digit of the EN 407 code. Level 1 means the glove keeps the inside temperature rise below 10°C for at least 15 seconds when touching a surface at 100°C. Levels go up to 4 at 500°C.

What jobs suit contact heat level 1 gloves?

Handling warm parts from ovens, dryers, moulding machines or hot water, short contact with warm pipes, and some kitchen and bakery tasks. They're not for hot metal or welding.

Is level 1 enough for welding?

No. Welding gloves are tested to EN 12477 and need higher flame, heat and spatter results. Choose a welding glove for any arc or gas welding.

Can I hold a 100°C surface for as long as I like?

No. The test checks protection for about 15 seconds. Longer contact or pressure can let heat through, so use tools or put items down regularly.
