What's the difference between EN 343, EN 342 and EN 14058?

EN 343 covers rain, wind and wet. EN 342 covers cold below minus 5°C. EN 14058 covers cool environments down to around minus 5°C. Many garments are certified to more than one.

Can a garment be rainproof and insulated?

Yes. Look for both EN 343 and EN 342 or EN 14058 on the label. Padded waterproof jackets and coveralls often carry both.

How do I choose for a damp, cold climate?

In the UK and Ireland, an EN 343 shell with a breathable rating plus a separate insulating layer gives the most flexibility. Add or remove layers as the weather changes.

Does wind matter as well as rain?

Yes. Wind removes body heat quickly. EN 342 and EN 14058 include air permeability classes, where a higher class means less air gets through.
